KABANATA I ANG SULIRANIN AT KALIGIRAN NITO Ang kabanata na ito ay nglalaman ng introduksyon, layunin ng pag-aaral, kahalagahan ng pag-aaral, saklaw at limitasyon ng pag-aaral at depinisyon ng mga terminolohiya. Introduksyon Ano nga ba ang harassing? Lingid sa ating kaalaman ang tormenting ay nagangahulugang pangugutya ito sa kapwa tao dahil mayroon siyang pagkakaiba sa mga taong nakapaligid sa kanya. Sa panahon na kung saan lahat ng kabataan ay tila alam ang lahat ng bagay sa mundo, hindi maiwasan ang pananakit sa mga kabataang para sa kanila ay mahina o walang alam. Ang harassing ay isang pag-uugali ng isang bata na maari niyang nakukuha sa mga kaugalian ng mga mas nakakatanda sa kanya, mga nagagap sa kanyang karanasan o di kaya sa kanyang kapaligiran. Madalas ito magsimula sa kanilang tahanan hanggang sa eskwelahan. Isang halimbawa ng pangyayaring nakakaapekto sa bata ang pagkakaroon ng magkahiwalay na magulang, dahil maaring dito magmula ang paghahanap ng attensyon ng bata sa pamamagitan ng pangungutya sa iba. Mga Guro, upang malaman nila ang maari nilang gawin lalo na kung ang nagyaring pambubully ay naganap sa loob ng kanilang silid aralan. Where the Sleeping Tyger Lies: An Analysis of the Sound Devices Used in The Tyger by William Blake The Tyger, written in 1974, is one of both simplicity and mystery. Within this poem written by old English William Blake, there are 13 full questions within this short 24 line work. Though many literary analysts have attempted to forge a meaning from this work, not one theme has a more correct stance than any of the others. One clear symbol within the piece is the Tyger, who represents some form of evil entity, quite possibly Satan himself. One possibility for the theme is that the poet is questioning why God would create such an evil being. This can be exemplified in the first stanza and last stanzas, where the word â€Å"could† is changed to†¦show more content†¦Alliteration is used quite frequently in Blake’s work, and is apparent in nearly all of the stanzas. Some clear examples of this sound device are burning bright (1) or distant deeps (5). These alliterations only further add to the hint at a prayer–like state of the poem, but also go on to help the poem have a smoother rhythm and flow. They are evident throughout the entire piece, and do tend to get quite a bit repetitive at times, but are always used effectively and to put strong emphasis on whatever is being alliterated. These alliterations point more directly towards the specific ideas mentioned earlier, and are Blake’s stabs at again creating a larger focus on the words selected. This is can be easily compared to â€Å"highlighting† words read aloud, as the audience and reader will take mental notes of them as they are spoken, and refer back to them when questioning the idea and theme of the poem. Abigail Williams of the Salem Witch Trials Abigail Williams (estimated to be age 11 or 12 at the time), along with  Elizabeth (Betty) Parris, daughter of Rev. Parris and his wife Elizabeth, were the first two girls in Salem Village to be accused of witchcraft during the infamous ​Salem Witch Trials. They began exhibiting odd behaviors in mid-January of 1692, which were soon identified as being caused by witchcraft by a local doctor (presumably William Griggs) called in by Rev. Parris. Family Background Abigail Williams, who lived in the home of the Rev. Samuel Parris, has often been called a niece or kinfolk of Rev. Parris. At the time, niece may have been a general term for a younger female relative. Who her parents were, and what her relationship was to Rev. Parris, is unknown, but she may have been a household servant. Abigail and Betty were joined by Ann Putnam Jr. (daughter of a neighbor) and Elizabeth Hubbard (a niece of William Griggs who lived in the Griggs home with the doctor and his wife) in their afflictions and, then, in accusations against individuals identified as causing the afflictions. The Rev. Parris called in Rev. John Hale of Beverley and Rev. Nicholas Noyes of Salem, and several neighbors, to observe the behavior of Abigail and the others, and to question Tituba, a household slave. Abigail was a key witness against many of the early accused witches, including the first ones identified, Tituba, Sarah Osborne, and Sarah Good, and later Bridget Bishop, George Burroughs, Sarah Cloyce, Martha Corey, Mary Easty, Rebecca Nurse, Elizabeth Proctor,  John Proctor, John Willard and Mary Witheridge. Deodat Lawson visiting, Abigail accused the respected Rebecca Nurse of trying to force her to sign the devils book. The next day, in the middle of the service at Salem Village Church, Abigail interrupted Rev. Lawson, claiming she saw Martha Coreys spirit separate from her body. Martha Corey was arrested and examined the next day. A warrant for the arrest of  Rebecca Nurse  was issued March 23. On March 29, Abigail Williams and Mercy Lewis accused Elizabeth Proctor of afflicting them through her specter; Abigail claimed to see John Proctors specter as well. Abigail testified that she had seen some 40 witches outside the Parris house in a ritual of drinking blood. She named Elizabeth Proctors specter as being present and named Sarah Good and Sarah Cloyce as being deacons at the ceremony. Of the legal complaints filed, Abigail Williams made 41 of them. She testified in seven of the cases. Her last testimony was June 3, a week before the first execution. Joseph Hutchinson, in trying to discredit her testimony, testified that she had said to him that she could converse with the devil as easily as she could converse with him. Abigail Williams After the Trials After her last testimony in the court records on June 3, 1692, the day that John Willard and Rebecca Nurse were indicted for witchcraft by a grand jury, Abigail Williams disappears from the historical record. Motives Speculation about Abigail Williams motives in testifying usually suggest that she wanted some attention: that as a poor relation with no real prospects in marriage (as she would have no dowry), she gained much more influence and power through her accusations of witchcraft that she would be able to do any other way. Our conversation on this topic lasted a good 20 minutes. Additional Comments My friend was worried about leaving to a foreign country or three months, he was afraid that he would not enjoy living outside his comfort zone and away from his friends and family. made it known that he appreciated our conversation and my input and advice. It seemed that he Just needed someone to express his feelings to and I was glad to be able to provide that for him. Circumstance We are lifelong friends and he was calling me Just to catch up and fill each other in on what we have been up to recently. nd I grew up together but at the age of 13 our parents had a falling out, so we see each other much less, specially now that he goes to school in Boulder Colorado. We regularly call each other to catch up and tend to have long, meaningful conversations about our recent activities. This time that he called me I was preoccupied with playing video games. Listening Behavior I was more preoccupied with my games than I was with my phone conversation. I exhibited signs of mindless listening and maybe a bit of pseudolistening because I would respond every now and again with an uh huh or yeah to make it seem like I was paying attention, when in reality I was completely bsorbed in my game. Additional Comments My friend knows me too well to not get the feeling of me being distracted. He quickly called me out on not listening to him and he told me to call back when I was free. Luckily and I are great friends and he didnt take my lack of attention offensively. I called him back 20 minutes later and we had a perfectly good, supportive and reciprocal conversation. Person My friends and dive leader Circumstance This past weekend I went on a scuba diving trip to Monterey with a few of my friends as part of furthering our diving abilities. Before the entering the he expected from us on this dive and the rules we had to follow. Listening Behavior Although my friends and I already have our scuba license and know how to safely dive, this lesson was meant to prepare us for the next tier of scuba diving and it is essential for our safety to mindfully listen to the instructor. During our lesson my friends and I were very conscious of our teacher and what he was saying, we never started side conversation or lost interest. The only input we made was a question here and there to clarify a misunderstanding. Additional Comments This circumstance required a great deal of attentive listening and I believe it was made easier by our love for the topic and the importance it held in regards to our safety and the safety of our buddies. Not only did we have to listen to our above water instructions but while underwater it is important to be aware of any sounds that might suggest a problem with the dive or your buddies. While doing this exercise I noticed that I am a more mindful listener than I had originally thought. When listening to my superiors such as instructors or elders I tend o talk less and give less personal feedback. Instead of listening to them and occasionally giving my opinions throughout the conversation, I like to listen thoroughly and then give my feedback if needed. During this time I do not always have the appearance of an attentive listener, sometimes my line of vision wanders from the speaker and I often do things with my hands or shake my leg, giving the appearance of insensitive or mindless listening, when in reality doing these things helps me absorb the information from the speaker. I found that different ircumstances require different types of listening, and usually I am able to provide this for the speaker. It is easy for me to keep my attention when the dialog is about something I have a person liking for, such as my dive instructor as mentioned earlier. It becomes harder for me to listen appropriately when it is regarding something I dont have an interest in, such as during a long lecture or something that I know I wont be able to impact or change. Although it may be more difficult for me to listen thoroughly, I have always been taught to be respectful and a large part of that is istening when someone is talking to me, so although at times I have trouble doing so, I rarely find myself completely unable to listen and understand. I learned that one thing that really gets in my way of listening well is watching T. V, playing video games or reading. When I am doing these things it is usually because I am trying to relax, and I tend to be in a relatively relaxed state of mind. My buddy called me the other day while I was playing video games, he is one of my few lifelong friends and he was Just calling to see how I was doing. I tried to talk with him while till playing games and he was quickly aware of the fact that I was distracted. He told me to call back when I was available and he understood my lack of attention. Before starting this assignment I had thought that I might not be the greatest listener because I tend to get distracted easily and I am usually fiddling with something while I listen to the speaker. After examining myself and my listening habits I learned that these actions actually help me to retain information. When I focus on preventing myself from doing these things it actually subtracts from my mage of a mindful listener, I have different techniques that allow me to be a strong listener. One specific idea from the book that I have been trying to apply to my listening technique is that of talking less. I noticed that while communicating with my friends we tend to constantly vocalize our opinions and ideas when listening to each other. While we are listening to what each of us is saying, it tends to seem more like a contest rather than a respectful, sincere case of listening. This habit tends to carry on to my other conversation with less familiar peers and sometimes my superiors. It is not always a negative thing, but I have learned that more times than not I am able to take a better understanding of the dialog if I hold my input in until the speaker has fully expressed their points. Through this exercise I learned that listening is easily taken for granted, it takes more effort than most initially believe to mindfully listen to others. By observing yourself as a listener, one is able to identify factors that either contribute to, or subtract from, productive listening. Without self-observance these factors are easily overlooked or disregarded as insignificant.

She talks about how these factors have remained interconnected with her life but in an almost sarcastic and humorous way. Of her five husbands, four loved her immensely and were docile to her wishes. They laid their life, love and wealth at her feet and praised her day and night and sought her attention and love. She had loved none of her first four husbands because they were old and had just married them for their money. However, if they satisfied and pleased her she let them have their way with her sometimes; she had their reigns in the palm of her hand. The Wife of Bath’s fifth husband was a man much younger than she and she loved him dearly. This is where she explains that women only love what they cannot have, and since this husband was â€Å"cool† to her affections she coveted him. But soon, aided by her clever shenanigans the lady of Bath had him in the palm of her hand too. He happily granted her authority over him and succumbed to her. The actual tale of the lady of Bath tells the story of a knight who was overcome by lust and raped a young girl in court. As punishment he was given a year to find out what women really want and if he found correct, his life would be spared, otherwise he would be killed. He had no success until the last day; he met an old woman who gave him the correct answer. What truly makes women happy is to have utter control over their lovers and husbands. Later, the old woman asks the young knight to marry her in return of her favor. He complies, but is unhappy because she is old and ugly. She gives him a choice; she can either be a good, faithful, ugly wife or an unfaithful but beautiful one. He leaves the decision at her discr etion. Made truly happy by her control over him, she turns into a beautiful and faithful wife. In sum, ‘The Wife of Bath’s Tale’ talks of a love that is selfish and riddled with coy plots and plans. In comparison, ‘The Knight’s Tale’ talks of a love that is pure and the things men do to attain their beloved. Through the progress of this story we learn that Palamon and Arcite are willing to risk their lives and freedom just to get to their beloved. Their love is blind and fearless and knows no bounds and they are willing to put everything that is most precious to them to be able to marry and possess the love of Emelye, with which the both are in love. In a way these tales are biased accounts of the topics of love, marriage, passion and desire for they confine each gender to a role and motive of an extreme, when in reality the truth is far from this. There are countless men who plot and scheme for love and when it comes to it, love only for self ish reasons and there are just as many, if not more women in this world who love blindly and faithfully regardless of how beautiful they are. However, there is much to learn from them too. Each defines a stereotype that exists in these settings, and even if the factor of gender roles is removed from the equation, most of the subject matter still rings true. Considering the text variable, different studies have been conducted to investigate the way readers affect the processes of reading and comprehension. The strategies used by readers, their background knowledge, motivation, attitude, age, personality and sex all have been investigated (Keshavarz. Ashtarian, 2008). This paper aims to investigate how gender differences influence reading comprehension. Statement of Problem In this paper the presented problem was to identify whether or not gender differences had an effect on reading comprehension ability. As a question, the problem is, What is the relationship between gender and reading comprehension ability for secondary students? (Brudice, 2009) Definition of Terms Gender Differences: Gender: the state of being male or female (with reference to social or cultural differences) Reading Comprehension can be defined as techniques for improving students success in obtaining useful knowledge from text. Reading comprehension is understanding some texts that are read, or the process of constructing meaning from read texts. Comprehension is a construction process because it includes all of the elements of the reading process working together as a text is read to create a representation of the text in the readers mind (Brudice, 2009). Discussion Reading comprehension is a complex cognitive skill in which the reader should construct meaning by using all the available resources from both the text and background knowledge (Brudice, 2009). Several studies, which have investigated some independent variables that are linked to students abilities to comprehend science textbooks, have conflicting findings. While some found important differences in boys and girls verbal abilities in favor of girls, some others did not find gender differences in their subjects abilities to comprehend two biology texts (Soybio; McKenzie-Briscoe, 1998). The findings of a 2008 study indicate that there is a difference between malesà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢ and femalesà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢ comprehension of the reading passages. Females are better in case of comprehending passages. Females are outstandingly superior in reading skills, and the proportion of men going to reading classes as a remedy, is higher than males. In my opinion there is only one reason why anyone should rely on fast food couple of times and that is time saving. It saves time. Working conditions at fast food restaurants are unsafe. Typical dangers the employees face ate slips, fall, cuts, burns, and robberies. Problems are dealt with by increasing security with cameras or more parking lot lights. If I worked at a fast food restaurant and I injured my self, I might not tell my manager because I could loose my job because they could blame me for the injury. Chapter 4 The advantages of starting your own business is if it is successful, you could get a lot of money, not to mention you are your own boss so no one besides the government tells you how to run your business. The disadvantages are the business could be unsuccessful and you could loose a lot of money. The advantages of working for someone else are you do not have to make too many tough decisions. The disadvantages are you will not make as much money as your boss, and you may not like your boss for whatever reason. Some legal issues that fast food franchises have been involved in are the Coble’s Bill which makes franchises obey the principles other companies follow. The Subway fast food franchise was involved in the SBA which helps restaurants by giving them government funds. Subway got involved and made it so they would get extra money. Chapter 5 Family farms are disappearing because industry farms take all the business and close family farms because they have no one to sell to. there are only a few small potato farms left because industries take up all the land and business. The take-over of agricultural farms effects communities because local farms go out of business and communities become dependent on the corporate farm. Chapter 6 Development and fast food farms take land and effects cattle pastures because there is less land for the cattle to graze. Since most cowboys and ranchers have gone out of business, they have become irreverent in today’s culture. The government set up the Sherman Antitrust Act and a congressional investigation in the meet packing industry to help ranchers. Later, the Reagan administration allowed the top four meat packing firms to merge and they took over the cattle markets. Corporate domination affected family farms by forcing them to work for them or go out of business. Self-reliance is still a viable goal for Americans, but has become very difficult because of big corporations. The fast food industry makes chicken farmers work for them or they would get no business. In farm culture, the land is a tangible connection to the past, meant to be handed down and not sold. To native Americans, the land meant life and prosperity. In traditional Irish culture, the land is a link to past generations and to loose the land meant to fail your relatives. Their concept of land is similar to the American concept. Chapter 7 The demands of the fast food industry changed towns by making is so almost everyone ends up eating fast food because the industries are aloud to put their restaurants wherever they want and advertise as much as they want until the town’s economy runs on the fast food restaurants. Since a meatpacking manager’s bonus is based in part on injury rate, many injuries go unreported and the worker is either given an easer job to takes time off to recover.
